Crazy but true story. My family's from Oklahoma. Been there for generations. My immediate family moved to Georgia when I was in middle school. After we moved here, we found out that several generations of my family lived in Georgia before they moved out west. I've been camping a couple times up on one of the mountains that creates the valley where the Hs lived; I knew I was close, but I didn't know how close. This past weekend, we took a little fieldtrip to north Georgia. (Please forgive the way I shortcut-ted the pictures into a collage...I'm having major computer issues.)
1. Top, left: Graveyard at Peavine Baptist Church. This is where a step-relative is buried. The story's much longer than that, but I'll save that for family reunions.
2. Top, middle: Lee and Gordon's Mill. Closing up shop. I hope they turn it into a good museum. This is when my public history certification would have come in handy.
3. Top, right: The no-longer-working mill water.
4. Top, right, down one: The whole mill.
5. Very center: The sign about Peavine Baptist Church. I'm interested in learning more later. It's been a little bit difficult finding out all the stories about our family at that time since records were burned in a courthouse fire.
6. Next to the very center, on the right: More of the mill creek water.
7 and 8. Bottom, left and middle: Private property. There's a H or two buried among the trees. I think it would be so cool if there were any stones there, but I'm sure it hasn't been maintained if there was anything there.
9. Bottom, right: Lee and Gordon's Mill was established one year before the Hs made their way out west. Did we walk through the same doorway?
More pics from that day are in queue when I have a bit of time again. It was a gorgeous October day.
